Materials

Materials

Choosing the appropriate plastic material for your application is an essential step in developing a successful finished part. Each material has its own characteristics, properties, and strengths. Therefore, there are many factors that can influence material selection, ranging from performance to appearance to cost. By working with you to understand the parameters of your project, we’re able to help you choose the best, most-cost effective method to achieve your goals.

Railway Interior Design

TPO

Thermoplastic Polyolefin is a compounded alloy containing rubber, a blend of polypropylene, and a reinforcing filler. It is a great replacement for metal parts as it provides high impact and chemical resistance.

Railway Interior Design

ABS

This material is manufactured by combining three different compounds: acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene. In addition to its high stiffness factor and creep resistance, ABS is one of the most versatile plastics available.

Railway Interior Design

HDPE

High-density Polyethylene is stronger and stiffer than standard polyethylene with good impact and abrasion resistance.

Railway Interior Design

HIPS

High Impact Polystyrene is a versatile and cost-effective material that is easy to form. Despite its name, HIPS actually provides low impact resistance when compared with other thermoformable materials (it simply has a higher impact rating than other materials in the polystyrene family).

Railway Interior Design

PC

Polycarbonate is extremely durable over a wide temperature range. It also offers high clarity, making it an ideal choice for transparent parts.

Railway Interior Design

PVC

Polyvinyl chloride is stiffer than ABS and features high impact strength and natural flame-retardant qualities.

Project Management Part Design Tooling Assembly Design Transport Packaging Design

Project Management

Brentwood’s internal project management team is well-practiced at working with complex timelines and deadlines. We ensure the manufacturing process flows smoothly from the first tooling order through final delivery. After that, project management works directly with our customer service team to make sure you can easily reorder parts.

Medical tray design

Part Design

Part design is admittedly Brentwood’s favorite step in the development process. Our engineers collaborate directly with you to create new design possibilities that yield properly formed and aesthetically pleasing parts. The part design process also aids project planning and can reduce scrap rates to save time and money.

Tooling

After collaborating with you throughout the design, prototyping, and approval processes, we utilize the knowledge gained to develop high-quality production tooling. All production tooling is produced using top quality materials and is precision machined to the highest tolerances. Post-production, all tools are carefully stored and maintained for future runs.

Railcar Manufacturers

Assembly Design

Thermoplastic parts often require additional hardware in order to interface with the other components of the project. Brentwood’s assembly team joins these parts with the adhesive and mounting equipment necessary to produce fully completed assemblies. This ensures all parts can be easily incorporated into the final build.

Transport Packaging Design

Post-manufacturing, it is essential that all of your parts are delivered efficiently and undamaged. For that reason, we develop custom packaging designs that protect your parts while they are in transit.

Films

Films

Depending on your material selection and project requirements, it may be necessary to cap the chosen material with a film. Films can be protective – to ensure that the material will be durable and long-lasting – or decorative – to enhance aesthetics.

PVDF

Polyvinylidene fluoride is a protective film that can withstand exposure to harsh thermal, chemical, and ultraviolet conditions.

Acrylic

This film is designed to protect materials lacking high impact strength and durability while also providing a shiny, decorative finish.

Tedlar®

The Tedlar film is a specialty material designed to combat graffiti, ensuring a clean appearance for the lifetime of the part.

Certifications

Certifications

ISO/TS 16949:2009

This technical specification is based on the ISO 9001:2008 quality certification but differs slightly in that it relates directly to the automotive industry for the manufacture and assembly of plastic thermoforming products.

ISO/TS 16949:2009

ISO 9001:2008

This certification furthers Brentwood’s dedication to quality, enabling us to produce consistent, top-tier parts that meet your expectations. It includes the design, manufacture, and assembly of plastic thermoforming products and the extrusion, calendering, and punching of semi-flexible thin-film PVC sheets.

ISO 9001:2008

ISO 14001:2004

To create and maintain sustainable business practices, Brentwood has developed an environmental management system that minimizes the effects of our operations on the environment. This includes the design, manufacture, and assembly of plastic thermoforming products; the extrusion, calendering, and punching of semi-flexible thin-film PVC sheets; and the injection molding of plastic products.

ISO 14001:2004
IRIS Certification

IRIS

The International Railway Industry Standard (IRIS) is based on the ISO 9001:2008 quality certification and further incorporates rail-specific requirements to ensure all sourced parts are high quality and reliable.
